Augustana (SD) Class of 1987

Class of 1987

Winter 2015 Class Agent Letter

Dear Augustana Class of 1987,

Greetings to you from Augustana’s campus. There have been days during this January when the weather has shown its cold and blustery side, but today we are experiencing a nice “January Thaw” with temperatures reaching a balmy 47 degrees. These temperatures remind us that spring is just around the corner, and for that we are grateful!

We are just winding up our January Interim, affectionately known as J-Term. I’m sure you have your own fond memories of a J-Term experience, don’t you? Today, it continues to be a time when students take just one class or choose to study away from campus – often on an internship or on a study abroad experience. This year, over 200 students traveled abroad during interim, including 60 members of the Augustana Band who spent the month performing in China. We are eager to welcome them all back to campus next week when the spring semester begins.

Each semester brings its own rituals and celebrations. When spring arrives, we look forward to thanking our donors during Love a Donor and at our Scholarship event. We celebrate our students during Verdier week (verdier is a Norwegian word meaning values) – recognizing one student for each core value of the College (Christian, Excellence, Liberal Arts, Community and Service). We lift up our faculty and staff for years of service at our Augustana Service Awards event. And we culminate the spring semester each year by welcoming our newest graduates to the alumni association during our Commencement weekend. I love the spring semester on our campus as it brings many opportunities for us to celebrate the spirit of Augustana. If you are nearby, please stop by and share in the festivities!

Along with this letter, you will find Augustana highlights in The Scoop as well as notes from your classmates. If you haven’t had the opportunity to make your gift to Augustana yet this year, I hope you will consider doing so by using our online form found at www.augie.edu/gift. Another great way to give back to Augie is to share your Augustana experience with families who have a high school aged child. Augustana continues to provide a high quality educational experience for a great value. If you have the name of a prospective student to share, you can do so at www.augie.edu/refer.

I hope you continue to be proud of your alma mater and the accomplishments of our students and graduates. Let us know the next time you’re in Sioux Falls, and we’ll reacquaint you with the campus!

Yours, for Augustana,

Mary Toso ’90
