Corey Camp became director of the Augustana Fund and annual giving in January.

Camp, a 1994 Augustana graduate, spent 10 years working for Nike on the West Coast before he and his wife decided five years ago that the Sioux Falls lifestyle made it the right place to raise their children.

As soon as the Augustana position became available, Camp knew it would be a good fit.

Question: Tell me about what your job entails.

Answer: I work within the office of development, and my primary responsibilities are raising funds for the Augustana Fund, which is our annual giving. The Augustana Fund is our unrestricted gifts that basically are designated for our ongoing operational needs, anything the college needs to support. Those funds typically go to scholarships and tuition assistance, our faculty needs and to support new technology.

Q: You graduated from Augustana in 1994. Did you ever think you'd be back here working here?

A: No, never. But I'm thrilled to. I graduated, then I spread my wings and headed for the West Coast for about 10 years, lived in Portland, Ore.

When I came back from Oregon, there wasn't an opportunity here, and Augustana was always one of those places, I said, "Boy, if an opportunity came up that fit, where they would want me to be part of the team, I'd be ecstatic."

Q: What did you do in Portland?

A: Worked for Nike, out at the world headquarters. I had many titles. The majority of my time I spent as a senior licensed product associate, in the team sports division.

Q: So how did you find this position, and what brought you back to Augustana?

A: My wife and I are both from Minnesota. She's also an Augie grad. So after a couple of kids, the grandparents started squawking about not getting to see them as much ... so we made the trip back to the Midwest and knew that Sioux Falls was a place that would be a fantastic place to live and raise kids, good quality of life, all those things. So we moved back about five years ago.

When I first came back, I worked in marketing and product management in some various roles. Most recently, I was a full-time real estate agent. And through a series of events, I was made aware of this position. I wasn't really looking for any new opportunities, but Augustana was one of those places that when it came up, I cocked my head and knew I had to take a good hard look at it.

Q: What do you like most about your job so far?

A: I came to Augustana because I knew I wanted to be at a place where I felt valued. The culture is a big thing to me in a workplace. I wanted to be in an environment where there's a strong culture. Augustana is a place I knew the people had the same core values as I did.

My passion for work is a big thing - a place where I could plug into a team, where I knew I could be passionate for the team. Impacting student lives is important to me. Part of what I do in my spare time, I'm also the team chaplain for the Sioux Falls Stampede, and that's a pretty similar age. You've got those young kids, those are kids that moved away from home, live in host homes. That's an age group I really enjoy working with.

Q: What are some of your goals for this position?

A: We're trying to reach our million dollar goal again this year. Last year was the first time in school history we reached $1 million with our annual fund, so we're trying to reach that again. Our fiscal year ends July 31.

Q: How close are you?

A: Not close enough ... we're getting there. It's always a stretch. What we've found is we've been real blessed with our donors, despite the economy. Sioux Falls is a very generous community. So even though everyone is tightening up, we've found that our donors have been extremely generous to us.
