Viking Days 2013

Reserve Tickets Now for Viking Days
More Than 900 Tickets Sold Already for All-Augustana Reunion, Varieties

Tickets are going fast for Viking Days 2013 events, including the All-Augustana Reunion and the 60th anniversary presentation of Viking Varieties set for Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Washington Pavilion. To date, more than 900 alumni and friends have registered for the weekend to celebrate Homecoming with us.

The majority of those are looking forward to seeing friends and former classmates. They also return to campus, research tells us, to see you – the faculty and staff members they knew during their time as students.

As a valued member of the Augustana community, you're invited to join students, alumni, and current and retired faculty/staff for Viking Days 2013!

Ole Stock — Celebrate homecoming with the campus community at Ole Stock, a wonderful opportunity to meet new members of our community while having great food, fellowship and fun! Join us on Monday, Oct. 14 — picnic begins at 5 p.m.; coronation begins at 7 p.m, followed by fireworks. Elmen Center and Ronken Field at Karras Park (Baseball Stadium). Free, but RSVP is required! Register now.

All-Augustana Reunion — Augustana alumni from all years, students, and past and present faculty/staff are invited to this event taking place in the Washington Pavilion at 6 p.m. There will be designated locations for our milestone reunion classes (those ending in 3 and 8). YOU are invited to join us for great conversations, appetizers and fun.

Viking Varieties — This year marks the 60th anniversary year of our first Viking Varieties show. We are celebrating this special anniversary with ONE great performance at the Washington Pavilion. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. for an 8 p.m. performance in the Mary Sommervold Hall. The Performing and Visual Arts department, alumni artists and over 200 student performers will be working together to make this a "Varieties Like Never Before."

The Afterglow — The Afterglow is another great Viking Days tradition where the party continues after Varieties. We will enjoy desserts on all levels of the Pavilion and dancing with a DJ in the third-level lobby.

Student Researchers Present Findings

Students presented their summer research findings to peers and faculty last week at Augustana's annual "Undergraduate Summer Research" poster presentation, held inside the Gilbert Science Center.
 
 

Mikkelsen Library Team Provides Region-Wide Leadership

This week, more than 400 librarians from 12 states will arrive in Sioux Falls for "The Library: All Travelers Welcome," a conference of the Mountain Plains Library Association in conjunction with the South Dakota and North Dakota Library Associations. Members of Augustana's Mikkelsen Library have played key roles in planning the conference.
 
 

Augustana Grad Works Behind the Screens at Google

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson competed in the fictionalized Google internship program in the summer movie “The Internship.” Well, they got the uniform right, and Laura (Pfeifer) Vardoulakis ’02 should know. She donned the new employee beanie earlier this year when she joined the user experience research team at Google’s Silicon Valley headquarters.

Maya Angelou to Appear on Campus Oct. 23

Dr. Maya Angelou, renowned poet and writer, will speak at Augustana at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Elmen Center. This will be the second time Angelou has appeared at the College. She previously spoke on campus in 2007.

Gov. Jon Huntsman to Speak at Boe Forum on Public Affairs Nov. 4

Former governor of Utah, 2012 presidential candidate, and former U.S. ambassador to China and Singapore Gov. Jon Huntsman will discuss the "Geopolitics of China and the U.S." at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, in the Elmen Center. Tickets are free but required.
